I've been using it a LOT for work the last couple weeks, and it makes imaging, configuration and software delivery on these 500+ computers childs play. Check it out |

Thursday, June 16 2005, 01:56:25 #26527 I'm writing something similar for game servers... I think they use that shit at Cingular... Best part when all computers get images crafted for a specific configuration, but there are 3-4 types of different ones and hundreds of them get fucked up.
At work most of our machines are P-4 1.7 but some are P-2-400, and it cracks me up when people like Iceman (managers) sit and stare at them for 5 minutes waiting for an app to launch, because that image has like 40 processes running in the background _________________

Luckily, in the environment i'm working in, I have time to play with options/settings/etc and can test with trial and error. I'm really learning a lot, and I hear that people with Altiris Certifications are in high demand and make $$$$$. We'll see. As far as different hardware configurations, you can set conditions, so depending on hardware (or other variables you can set) You can have one core image, and a list of tasks to run after (drivers, applications, etc.) that will change automatically based on the variables you set. I am currently working as a contractor and I was offered a full time position because they like how when they ask me to solve an issue, its almost instant. I love a challenge, and I love being able to impress people that are higher ranking than me. It just sucks that my contract stipulates that I can't take a job with a company I was doing contract work for for 6 months. We're gonna talk numbers tomorrow, and if they are anywhere in my range, I'm just gonna take it and say fuck with my contract once it ends. |

Thursday, June 16 2005, 02:44:09 #26532 What I do is make a generic image (in windows, right before it reboots before hardware detection), then once I have naked OS and basic software, I create scripts that download packages from the main computer and install them reporting to me. This is better because if one of the computers is off you don't have to walk to it to turn it on, next day when users come and turn it on it says "don't touch, installing bla bla". This helps because you don't destroy people's favourite's etc. If you simply dump entire drive image you erase cookies, favorites etc (unless they are saved on a server). We use Citrix thin client at work.

We use Citrix thin client at work. Well, that works too. We are also capturing user personalities, but we haven't tested them yet. This way they won't lose favorites or anything. I love 'wake on lan' |

Friday, June 17 2005, 20:44:57 #26599 I think the person who configured Citrix thin client at work was on some cheap ass crack! Half the time you can "attempt" to open it and after waiting 3 to 4 minutes for it to load you finally get in and start an application up then need to swith to the fat client for another application......then the thin client crashes and you have to wait another 3 or 4 minutes to get in! |
