Monday, August 2 2004, 17:44:58 #9071 can IE actually be broken? My sister is having a problem with her comp that has me baffled. Internet Explorer is broke; launching web pages results in IE crashing (but netscape-based browers work fine, so the connection is OK) so likewise other features in Windows won't work. Basically any window that uses IE won't work, so just imagine trying to trouble-shoot anything- its impossible. Since she uses outlook for her e-mail she can't get into that either (again, IE based).
For another example- her keyboard was fucked up so I went to device manager. Highlighted the keyboard, chose properties. It said it was working fine, so I clicked on "troubleshoot". CRASH! How frustrating. Norton says its virus-free. I usually run trendmicro's virus scan as a backup, but I can't in this case because its active-x based (and I can't use IE). But I'm pretty sure the thing is clean of viruses. I can't have microsoft.com scan for Windows updates, so I have no idea if it is updated properly. Then again I could go into her program list and fish through all the update packs looking for something to be missing... that would suck big time. Please remember I'm lazy. :-P Just wondering if anyone has any ideas... haven't ever seen this before. I want to try anything before having to re-format. thanks. _________________ 46 and 2 |

Monday, August 2 2004, 18:57:14 #9081 I dunno.. that doesn't solve the core problem of the system crashes. I'd almost say it's time for a reinstall. Depending on what version it should take less then an hour (if you have all the drivers).

Tuesday, August 3 2004, 03:37:19 #9107 Try this one:
Start->Run-> "sfc /scannow" Make sure you have a Windows XP CD in your drive. Maybe this could solve your little problem. Other than that, I'm a big fan of reinstalling |

Tuesday, August 3 2004, 04:30:39 #9108 I've never had that problem, it be caused by some spyware that was removed and decided it wanted to be an asshole and take some needed files with it. _________________ The truth only hurts the weak minded. |

Tuesday, August 3 2004, 10:03:19 #9110 Damn man I feel for you, I've had that happen to me. I was never able to fix it either, had to format the pc Anyway it's not that hard to format, as long as you do it the right way it's very stress free and takes little time. Here are some steps to help you format with no problem 1. If you ever download a program that you will use, make a folder called "programs" and save every single downloaded program there. Including MSN and stuff. Then when you are gonna format, burn them to a cd and BAM you have everything and no need to go out and search for them again, plus you don't need the internet to have them either. 2. Try to get a backup medium that runs every night automatically. Like I have a tape drive with 3gigs on each tape, every night at 3am it runs and saves what I need. 3. Burn big files/programs on a cd so you will never loose it. Thats the most I can think of off hand, but yeah I recommend a nice format, I'm sure you need to do one anyway. If you have your computer for more than 6 months, I'm sure a format won't hurt. Anyway good luck and show your computer who's boss |
