Over pretty cool. Here are some suggestions to make it better. -Take out the pub footage. For some reason, watching scrim or match footage is more exciting than watching pub footage, because you know the other team KNOWS what they are doing, or at least thinks they do. In a match you will rarely frag someone who isn't trying. If need be, set up more scrims until you get the ammount of footage you desire. - Less slowmotion and rewinds. In my opinion, you shouldn't have to slow things down in your video. Some of the most impressive videos that i have seen have had little to no slowmotion. The less you use slowmotion, the more impressive it becomes. Certain movies (cpma done by vo0 being a major example) only used slomotion gameplay when it was needed to see what was going on, and even then, it wound down from full speed to slow and back up to full speed in less than a few seconds. - More maps. Now, I do not play IU very much, and I understand that q3ctf is one of the main maps people like to play, but i would like to see some other maps in the movie, mainly to add more scenery and give people some reference points. "Did you see that awesome shot kill@will made?" "Which one?" "The one on q3ctf1" "Which one?" "Where he nasty flickshots that guy" "Which one?" "When they're both in the air man" "Which one" That is a huge exageration, but I think you can see my point. I have seen many of base 1v1 movies or cpma movies that have been absolute shit because they only featured pro-q3dm6 or cpm3a. I saw some of the wtf maps in the trailer, and I personally like those maps so I say add more, but dont forget any other maps you may play q3wcp23(bubctf1) and q3ctf4. They all add more dynamics to the movie. Again, this is all my opinion, I have seen quite a few good movies, as well as more than my fair share of bad ones (i have contributed to this category with some of my shitty trailers). Good luck man, own them all! _________________ The Zeros Homepage |

Friday, February 4 2005, 21:38:15 #21291 thanks for that--- the problem is the movie is pretty much done... and all i had to work with what i had... i had other maps but nothing worthy of putting in a movie.... as far as the slow mo thing... I had to use it in the final movie just to sync the music better with the shots.. the Trailer was kinda thrown together with little effort for people just to see it. When i do use slo-mo i usually follow it up with the regular speed just so you know what you are about to see or what you just saw..some shots in this movie or so fast and crazy that you wouldnt see'em other wise. In the movie there is more footage of matches as just random people..but agian... i had files oand files of demos and took about 2 months looking through them all just to find what i have... i think when i release the final movie--you will see its much different then the trailer....
thanks for the input--my next movie will be much different--this was my first attempt at anything like this and learn a lot along the way.....3 months in the making |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 00:30:15 #21302 A few tips:
1) Since your server ran at 20 FPS for those matches, some parts turned out uber-gay-jiggy. 2) No one wants to see your lagometer. 3) No one wants to see the scores. 4) People want to see complete flag runs instead of "I killed 2 guys and grabbed the flag". Then you leave out the part when you get killed by Evolution and he gets his flag back all the way to his base, killing your entire team on his way. 5) Movie should be 800x600 at most, even preferably in NTSC. 6) Reduce the crosshair size, and resize it so it doesn't look like a bitten off cookie. 7) Record screenshots with 4x or 8x antialias and anisotropic filtering, with "r_loadbias -3", if not possible, record screenshots at 2x size and then resize them to 50%. 8) Audio should be 64-96 kbps MP3 stereo. (Not Joint stereo!) 9) Codec should be XviD and not DivX. People avoid DivX because it commercialized, and is full of spyware. Here's an example of good codec (this is from DRC movie) http://www.wartex.net/files/media/video/scene003.avi _________________

Saturday, February 5 2005, 11:35:24 #21319 thanks for the tips wartex... the problem i came across is that this was the first time i did this.. so i tried to get rid of as much as possible--i counldnt find out how to get rid of the score board... and i already converted all the demos which took a long time.. I am no about to redo it... took two month with all the demos i had... I have learned many things since i first started so next movie will be much better...I used divx cause it had the best compression.... the final movie si going to be 800x600 the trailer was just 1024x768...i figured it would give better resolution played at a lower screen size..please remember this is a trailer and not a real example of what the movie is actually like. I just waned to put it out there for people to know what we were doing.. the actual movie ha flag runs and returns... but they are long to watch so i have cut some down with a shot and escape... and the part about EVO--was funny--but this isnt a movie about evo so of course i would show that part having said all that does anyone have anything postive to say about it..or is everyone jsut going to rip me apart? WARTEX? i appreciate the help and critisim but would also ike to hear what i did do right thanks |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 11:58:09 #21320 Projects this big are learning expierences, especially the first time you try one. Mes you did a great job and just think of what the next one will be like. You put a lot of work into it and deserve recognition. Wartex is a perfectionist, not just with other peoples work but also with his own. And sometimes thats both a blessing and a curse. In all honesty hes trying to push you to do it better, but I can see why it might not come directly across like that.
Take the good parts (the technical advice) leave the bad (what might seem to you like unconstructive criticism). |

WARTEX? i appreciate the help and critisim but would also ike to hear what i did do right The fact that you would undertake such a project was positive. The fact that you asked for feedback was a positive. Some people mentioned items that you had no control over... e.g., maps in trailer were a function of the demos you had. Some people simply stated their preferences... not a direct criticism of your work. And others said they liked it. (Hal, for instance) To me, when you "ask for feedback", you are (tacitly) asking 'What would make this better?' Don't let your shorts get in too big of a knot when they respond. Every response is valid... they are based on multimedia experience and/or preference. The nice part about the responses is that you can take them or leave them... now THAT is a positive! And finally... I seriously doubt that this 'movie' will bump 'The Avaitor' out of the Oscar race. Therefore, when all is said and done, ask yourself one question: "Do the DoD members like it?" If the answer is yes, that is -- after all -- the maximum positive! You're doing this for them, right?? |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 12:50:23 #21328 Remember people tell it looks nice because they dont have the courage to tell you bad points. Its only something to help you in the process of making this. DOnt take it as someone shitting in your soup. Its your best critics, THE PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!

Saturday, February 5 2005, 15:21:29 #21338 Messiah, I'd have to agree with what Wartex said. There are alot of little tweeks that could have been done.
All in all I like the trailer. You have a good thing going there. Now this is constructive criticism I'm not bashing (being a movie making noob myself). cg_draw2d will do wonders. The lagometer and the scores could come off. I'm happy to see that you did get the scripting out of there (something I did'nt do in my movie). I did'nt particularly care for the pace. I understand the use of slow-motion to be able to catch the flick shots, but it just seems like the whole trailer is in .75 timescale or less. My personal preference (including music i.e. slipknot/metal) is fast action. I would like to have to stop the video after saying "holy fuck" and see it again. There is a time and place for slow motion but it cant be a constant. Diverse map selection is a must. CTF1 is a good map, not great. Unfortuantely not many people cant play outside of that map. Take most IU players off of it and they get owned. I would've liked to have seen more maps used in the trailer. I know that frag messages were left in there on purpose, but you might consider resizing them. You want the audience to focus on your players and what they are doing, not necessarily who their fragging for the sake of promotion. Overall I rate the trailer an 7 out of 10. I'm very picky so that's a very good rating P.S. I saw those 2 frags on slim and hal....We'll get you back, lol _________________ I see Honesty and Greed fighting with lightsabers. Saturday, February 5 2005, 18:09:23 #21345 i must apologize...i didnt mean for what i said about the postive critism to sound harsh. I really appreaciate all the help and advice as i need it. But i wanted to also here what looked good. All comments are taken with respect and i want to utilize them so i have the info for next time. So please do no misunderstand. Wartex gave some good data there and was asking what he though on a postive note... what did look good.
Please also understand that this is a TRAILER and no real refelction on how the final movie looks...its much much different with different music and effects. Wanf the cg_draw2d sucks for one reason. I used it on mr.worms part in the demo and you will notice that it doesnt tell you when you fragged someone.. I wanted to leave in the frag messages cause some shots you could tell if it was a hit or not... the frag message would confirm it. the frags on you guys were from our IU match..there is more footage in there... i like you opinion on the slow motion thing..maybe its best to keep it out... i used it a bit in the movie put with each slow mo added a visual effect to go with it. Maybe i can give you a screening of the final project before i release it and you can tell me what i should change or leave... anyone interested in this please email....messiah@q3dod.com i would like to get some better ideas on how to make it better.. but please realize some things like the maps and angle and any of the shots in the movie cant be changed..i dont have the demos any more and IU is very restircting to what you can do with a demo as far as angles and such... thanks again |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 18:15:23 #21347 No problem bro.
As far as IU being restrictive, it transfers rather nicely to Defrag. Of course you know defrag has some of the best recording options of any mod. I understand that this movie is complete. On the next project you might consider using defrag as your primary means of recording. It's very flexible. There's even scripts out there that let you......well, you'll see. |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 22:25:10 #21359 Copy demos to defrag/demos/
or battle/demos/ Also, you can use cf_ variables (they are in x-battle, not sure if in Defrag) to change the font size to 0x0 of the frag message etc. This way you can control what text you want to see and what you don't. |

Saturday, February 5 2005, 23:12:11 #21367 the demos will run that way---really? i thought it would give a miss match error--i have to try that--thanks
i tried the cf variables in IU and no luck...hmmm..this may make the movie better..awesome--thanks guys |

Sunday, February 6 2005, 02:56:18 #21381 go into your quake3 folder. Open IU, and then open up the demos folder. Select the demo (right click and cut). Back out and go to your defrag folder. If there is'nt a folder labeled "demos" then create one and drop the demo in there. Done, and done.
Load quake, goto mods and click defrag. When defrag pops up you can enter defrag setup/demos to change options such as camera angle, draw items etc. Click on demos and the demo you dropped into the folder should show up. If not then you did'nt do something right. Defrag will read Instaunlagged, IU1.2 beta, Battle, and probably freeze. I do recall having a problem with it viewing demos taken from Instaunlagged12, but for insta the only really good camera angle is first person. P.S. I can see how this post may seem condescending but I assure you it was not intended to be. Good luck. |

Monday, February 7 2005, 20:51:27 #21438 Dont let people's criticism get you down. If someone wants to get on your back about stupid things, then ask to see their movie. I made a shitty trailer once and had this kid tearing it apart, and when I asked to see his, it was horrendous. Keep in mind, mine was pretty short, and not too spiffy. Mistakes/things that could be done better included:
fov: 90 Excess things on screen like console messages and lagometer No effects very little music syncing, and the song was longer than the video, and abruptly ends without any fading. Mediocre frags 1st person without camera angles. Yeah dude, so if it seems like someone is hammering your movie pretty hard, ask to see his movie. Just maybe, (if he isn't just being a dick) he wants you to do better than he did. I know I don't want trash like the abomination I made circulating the internet |
