I'm planning to launch DRC internet radio. For now we will use unused cable bandwidth, in the future we may switch to external bandwidth provider like http://www.steadyhost.com/streamhosting.php
I have 1.5 megabit upstream, so at 128 kbps I can fit 8-10 listeners, with line fully loaded. We will use domain names just like for games so that any given station is not tied to a particular IP, in case IP changes. You can broadcast your own genre if you want, I can provide all the software. You need Winamp, shoutcast plugin for it, and DNAS server console, I can provide that too. I'm currently broadcasting Ambient/Trance (not pop shit, but rare and high-quality music), add this to your Winamp playlist: 24.89.209.186:8000

Wartex I still have to send you money for the name also. Plus I have tracks for you to look over that i can upload if you would like.

I also think time slots should be made for different types of music.

Make a playlist for each hour.

Also we can make commercials for the forum and such. Maybe even others would like to advertise aswell. Like only 5 minutes per hour of ads.

I LOVE this idea Marble! Is it possible for each of us to record ourselves "voice only" via winamp (for example)? If this is possible each of us could record "one liners" and put between songs or what ever time frame you see fit. This would be awesome and probally funny as hell!

For Example we could say something like:

"Yo, this is the Iceman coming at ya from the Digital Reality Crew. Stop by and vistit www.drc.su and get OwNeD!"

Fun stuff like that, that is not short, sweet to the point and lets people know of our site/server.

yeah and we could have segments where we actually dj for an hour or whatever. but during day hours we could record soundbytes. I looked around at 24/7 radio hosting and its friggin EXPENSIVE. We would have to somehow make money off of this. :/ its too much to maintain month to month with donations.

We can limit access by IP, i.e. people can pay a small monthly fee and have a dedicated access to the stream.

Now we need to find a good hoster....

Google "shoutcast hosting" and go thru the links and post them here.

What we need to look for:

1) $50 +/- 10% maximum price. I.e. if you find a hoster that has super deal for $52 that's still fine.
2) Stream has to be 96 or 128 kbps. Anything lower sounds like AM radio.
3) Number of streams have to be 20 or more.
4) There muste be no bandwidth overage charges or bandwidth cap.
5) They must accept Mastercard or Paypal.

If there is a toll free number, call them and ask: "How many streams can you host for $50 at 96 kilobit per second, and is there a badwidth cap or bandwidth overage charges".

They do 30 listeners for 30 bucks a month. At 96k, I dont think we can beat that.

Ok, some good news. There is new format, AAC+, at 24 kbps it sounds same as 96 kbps mp3. That means I can hold 20 people at 32-48 kbps AAC+ stream with CD quality. We may end up getting external hoster with 30+ slots and low bitrate for under $40. I'm listening to trance at 24 kbps now and it sounds ok. Not the best but ok, eats about 4 KB/s. I have about 120 KB/s stable upload - so I can hold 25 people.

I have 1500 kbit up and can hold up to 12 people, at most. I don't know any ISP's in USA that offer even 1000. I'm looking for a full-time host, with 50+ slots at 96 kbit/s, that's 10 mbit at least. Practice shows that radio that is down more than 1 hour a day is doomed. We need a host that will be up ALL THE TIME.

PS: I'm still expecting everyone to spend 15 minutes with google and post 10-15 hosters, no duplicates.
