hey guys im gettin settled in boston. buyin real expensive toys and whatnot. (more on this later). anyhow i setup a PC with a rad9700pro i bought off a friend for $40. quake 3 crashes with this error. then the monitor goes dead. sometimes says signal out of range. ive attached a pic of the error. i exited quake (it was still running after the display went dead) and the monitor turned back on. its either the vid card or the cheap motherboard its hooked up to. any ideas???

6800 blows ass.

Out of range means your vid card is generating refres rate your mon cannot support.

1) Get the the vid driver thats 1-2 versions previous to latest release.
2) Run quake with "+set r_mode 4 +set r_displayrefresh 60"
3) MUST HAVE: Correct monitor driver.

Install VNC I can dig in your settings, it's prolly something stupid like Vsync on somewhere etc.

Baaaaah! The everlasting "Wartex bashes shit of other people"!

Get 2 ATI X600 in CrossFire for about the same price and they will rip it another asshole.

And if you get 2 X850XT, then even 6800OC in SLI will still blow ass against them.

Remember 8x agp is backwards compatible with 4x. Make sure Anti aliasing is off also. Did you try to OC this card by chance????

I said just to run it in "safe" mode. And if your picture looks "ok" at 85 it doesn't mean anything, I clocked my monitor to 155 Hz at 1024x768 using a special ATI card and it looked fine, but if I left it at that or tried it in OpenGL apps it wouldn't work and fry the monitor on top of that. And, not everyone has same monitor as you.

ive had it happen @ 60hz too, same prob tho.
i installed catalyst version 5.4 (newest is 5.6) with the 930sb display drivers it still has the same problem. seems that if i hang out and wait for the error message to come up i can keep playing. i just have to click on the game screen and reset the gamma

marble i havent modded this card, i bought it used tho

Someone probably thought they were hardware god and oc'd the piss out of a card that cant handle it. Do you get like pink lines or greens lines. Even blocks appearing on your monitor. Also what are you using for grfx cooling.
