The prod that he uses is for equalizing potential (difference in voltage) between the helicopter and the wire. When helicopter touches the ground, excess electrons run off to the ground, causing the potential between the heli and the ground to be 0 volts. Voltage between the power line and the ground is 500,000 volts. Since difference between heli and the ground is 0, and between ground and wire is 500 kV, the difference between heli (after takeoff) and the wire is also 500 kV. So when helicopter takes off and approaches the powerline, he has to stick out a prod that alows electrons to jump from the wire to the helicopter body to saturate it to 500 kV. If he stuck out his arm he would be dead instantly. When they land, lightning will strike between the heli and the ground (since heli is 500 kV now and the ground is awlays 0) bringing it back to 0 volts.
