I want to change the 404 page on my website. I read up on google how to do it and it said you need to edit .htaccess files on your webserver. I checked and it's not there (I also followed instructions in help file to display hidden files in FTP program, still wasn't there). I then tried creating a .htaccess file in notepad and saving it to my computer, it didn't work. The tutorial on the web clearly states that the file should be typed exactly how I type it ".htaccess" without speech marks, but with the full stop. An error message comes up saying you have to enter a file name. Life's a bitch.

Any ideas?

Use Putty to connect to your webserver. Put the .htaccess file one folder HIGHER than your webpage. That should make it work. Ask Wartex to be sure

Oh, I just noticed you weren't having troubles uploading but to name it properly. It's not life that's a bitch, it's windoze. Use FTP to upload this file as temp.txt in ASCII mode to the directory where your website's at and then use FTP to rename to .htaccess
For this to work I hope your webserver runs *nix

Ok... here's another funny fact. When you use START-R to run CMD.exe you can use the command RENAME to rename any file to .htaccess. well.... my 3 cents I guess.
