I know Sad I'm probably going to have to settle for the 545i for now @ $65000 instead of $100k+

Well holy fuck I test drove a 530i and 330i this afternoon.

The 545 is stupid because its $10000 more for 100hp. They are actually going to be changing the motor and rebadging it as a 550i next year.

The 330i is very agile, and EXTREMELY responsive. Acceleration and braking is excellent. Its decently fast from 0mph, and while already rolling, mashing the gas really throws you back in the sporty recaro style seats that come with the sport package. The braking is just unbelieveable. I can't even fathom how excellent the brakes are. The thing stops on a fucking dime. I can't even stress the tiny amount of pressure needed to stop normally. In a normal car, you have to apply decent pressure. In the 330i, if you applied the same pressure, you'd stop almost instantly.

The new 3 series is a bit larger than previous 3's but still handles incredibly.

The 530i has the same engine as the 330i, but its a few hundred pounds heavier, as well as larger cabin space and whatnot. I personally like the looks of the 5 series more, but it wasn't as fun to drive as the 330.

The larger 5 series, well, felt pretty large. It was still a great ride, and the sport package was a nice addition. Driving both of these cars was a great feeling, and felt in control even during hard acceleration, braking, and cornering.

The dealer is lucky he let me take the cars out by myself, or he may have shat himself.

Unfortunately, the two cars had auto trannies with steptronic, and the 530 had the sport package with sport shift mode.

In regular automatic, its just economical, low rpm shifting. In the sport mode, it revs out longer, and when you let off the gas, it won't just shift to a lower gear, it will stay until you slow down enough to need a downshift, or speed up enough to upshift.

Steptronic auto was the closest thing i could get to manual since they didnt have manuals in stock, but i actually kinda like not having a clutch but still being in control of the gearing. The traffic here is pretty shitty, but since the 3 series is a real driving machine, i'm going with regular manual.

If i bought the 5, i would get SMG or the steptronic.

The new 3's ignition is fucking sweet. theres not an actual key. there is the keyfob, which you slide in a slot, and then just tap the start button. Sweet shit!

I've decided to go with the new 330i. Its cheaper for insurance, cheaper overall, and in my opinion, outperforms the 530. I'm sure the 545 is a bit faster with the extra 100 horse, but still a larger car, and doesn't handle as well as the 3 series in my opinion.

Good choice on the 3 series over the 5, in my opinion.

You know that pic I posted in the other thread, with my friends silver M? He ended up not keeping that (that was a weekend test drive) and instead bought a red 2004 M3 with 19" wheels, the SMG tranny and navagation system. i drove it around last weekend a bit. The paddle shifting took some getting used to but after I was comfortable I really had fun. Its pretty weird how you can feel the clutch engaging and disengaging but you aren't pushing a pedal.

My only complaint (and the only reason I wouldn't spend the extra $ on smg) is that when the wheels are spinning you don't have the control of slipping the clutch. He says that after driving it for a while, you learn to control wheelspin by letting off the gas, apparently under hard driving the computer sorta slips the clutch. Even if hes right I'd rather have the control of a clutch. Also, from a dead stop, when you hit the gas there is a hesitation. Its not slow throttle response but it FEELS like slow throttle response. Its actually the clutch engaging. I didn't like that feeling.

Dude, you gotta look into lightly used models. He found that car with 19K miles fully loaded for $42k. thats a fucking steal. He bought it from a dealer in florida that had it listed on ebay. Start looking for small volume wholesalers, you can save tons of cash or get the next model up for the same money. IMO thats the way to go, fuck new car prices. Let some other sucker take that massive 1st owner depreciation hit.

Yea I asked about SMG, and they are actually no longer going to be offering it on the 6cyl. I think he said they MIGHT still offer it on the M's and v8+

the M is too fucking expensive. after i configure it with all the options i want, its 60000 or more, and still the older body style.

i live at a high elevation, there is no point trying to have a fast car.

Rolling eyes Laughing putting words in my mouth. Actually I shouldn't put down the smg because I didn't get to fully play with it. There are 5 settings; 4 when you start and the 5th one (the most aggressive) when you enable the sport mode thingy that also opens the butterflies all the way. Most of my takeoffs were on low settings and not that hard. I was handed the keys and told "do whatever you want just don't spin the wheels" and I didn't argue with him. Smile I did however drive it in high rpm's on that 5th setting, and it shifts from gear to gear in just a couple tenths of a second. Its like an f1 car. Pretty cool.

On its lowest setting it shifts slower than grandmas Lincoln, I shit you not. Its almost funny.
