I've always stated NIC plays a big role when it comes to lag, it's time someone came up with a "gamer NIC": http://www.killernic.com/KillerNic/


PS: I used Compaq NIC based on Intel CPU. Cuts off 3-6ms lag compared to Realtek or ADMTek, and reduces CPU load greately, especially if during massive plasmagun spam.

High-Performance and Flexibility for Today's Businesses - Full-duplex support allows the NC3121 to transmit and receive data simultaneously at rates up to 20 Mbps for Ethernet and 200 Mbps for Fast Ethernet. Performance is further enhanced with 6 KB of buffer memory, which makes for low CPU utilization at high throughputs. Auto-sensing capabilities enable it to automatically negotiate between 10 and 100 Mbps to achieve the highest common speed on the network.

Port Bonding - Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) and Cisco's Fast EtherChannel are two port bonding methods supported by the NC3121. ALB provides both failover and balancing of transmit traffic across NICs for increased performance. For even higher performance, Cisco's Fast EtherChannel (FEC) provides port failover and balancing of transmit and receive traffic across all NICs when connected to a switch that supports FEC.

Network Fault Tolerance (NFT) - NFT support, sometimes called "NIC Redundancy" or "failover," allows the server to always keep an active link. After installing a second, compatible NIC, if the primary network connection fails for any reason, the second, backup NIC will automatically take over-retaining the network connection.

PCI Hot Plug - PCI Hot Plug support enables the network controller to be replaced or added to a server without powering down the system. This can reduce NIC maintenance time and allows for system maintenance during regular business hours which will increase system availability and non-stop serviceability.

Diagnostic LEDs - LEDs show link integrity and network activity for easy troubleshooting.
