I need some advice on a LAPTOP. I am looking to but a new laptop..not for gaming..but for Office use.. Looking for something that is new and upgradable. IE..64 bit processor- AMD or INTEL. I have fallen off on whats new and good in the laptop world and since they changed the name of the processors to hexadecimial, i havent kept up. Looking to see if anyone can help me find something good and resonable priced. I want to spend a max of 1500. thanks in advance!

I have an IBM ThinkPad Z60M with the widescreen... got it for $1700 - w/ 1GB Memory and 80GB HD.

It is my second ThinkPad and I have had Toshiba's too. The best layout - IBM seems to think of everything from a business aspect - great system and best bang for the buck. Good

thanks..
Wartex. I wanted your personal opinion seperate from everyone elses. Thats why I pm'd you and posted.
Cause sometimes when you post a response. No one else will challenge it. So I wanted it seperate from here.

More opinions would be appreciated. I am looking into all suggestions.

Thanks

Mess...

Do you really need a laptop? Seriously... do you need that self-contained aspect that runs on batteries?

I do not like laptops, but I agree that in certain situations only a laptop will do. The batteries typically only last 12 to 18 months before they won't hold a charge... are expensive to replace... the laptops are (to me) impossible to service/repair... provide little latitude for future mods such as upgraded video, larger LCD screen... people with big hands have trouble using undersized keyboards...

Price of units mentioned sounds attractive. I simply suggest that you confirm the need for a laptop. I addressed one customer's need for a physically small computer by using a Shuttle XPC... I installed/added a handle on the top of the case and she can handle the computer like a attache case. You can also get carrying cases for these units and that case will accommodate the LCD monitor, as well. Down side is that high-end XPC (top-of-line video, 2Gb + RAM, 64-bit cpu, etc) is quite expensive.

If you are a *road warrior*, then laptop is probably the way to go. But if not...

Yes a laptop in Necessary for my job and I travel a lot and need it for personal use to. I owe 5 desktop PC's And have 3 laptops already. I had a dell Insperion 5150 which just blew up. At least the screen died. So looking to get a newer better 64 bit laptop that is reliable. Just need it for daily business things and dont need something that is like the XPS models. If I have to spend more then my target for a good reliable Laptop I will. My last laptop(gateway solo 5300) has lasted 5 years now and works for small things like what I am doing right now. But since my other gateway is too outdated and MY dell just died. I need something for work.

Yep... you are a candidate for a laptop!

On that issue, I can't offer any good advice. If I were in your shoes, I would look for some impartial reviews. Doesn't CNET.com have reviews??

And OLDie has already said that his laptops work fine for him. You would probably do well to check them out.

Cheers! Good luck in your search...
