Wednesday, September 27 2006, 20:07:20 #36715 Opera update Thanks to Wartex I was able to get the Anniversary Opera browser for free, but I have a question about updating it.
If I update the banner-free Opera 8.02 that I have right now, will banners appear even though I have activated this one and it is banner free? I want to update it, but I don't want banners either! lol Advice? |

I just updated it not that long ago, and let me tell you this is the best browser out there by far! I'm a huge fan of FireFox, but this browser is even better if you can believe that! IE can rot in hell for all I care! I bought my Windows XP Pro, so I am not worried about it, but others might be Here is a list of some of the things the new Opera can do: 1. Supports RSS Feeds - Notifes of incoming mail 2. Supports Newsgroups - Haven't used this yet, but I think it supports notification. 3. Supports Widgets - Haven't used this yet 4. Supports IRC Chat - I'm an IRC n00b so I don't know much about it. 5. Supports e-mail that notifies you immediatley of incoming mail. 6. You can also make your browser look anyway you want. Right now mine looks exactly like FireFox. Very configurable browser! 7. It supports tabbed browsing 8. If your browser crashes for any reason and you have a bunch of tabs open, it remembers and restarts the same tabs as you previously had before it went down. Great for surfing because it saves you from going through the history. 9. I'm not sure how to explain this, but you can attach "notes" to specific websites if you need to remind yourself of something. 10. Remembers your passwords if you want to and you can choose for the server to remember your password or just that page your browsing. If you save a favorite after saving your password, it will take you straight to the page you want to go to, where FireFox will ask for the master password first, then you click "login", so its quite a bit faster in that aspect. I do like the master password feature of FireFox though, and in a way I wish Opera would include it, but it uses "Wand" instead which enters your password and logs you in all the same time. It basically takes away the purpose of a "password" if your computer is shared. Although you might be able to configure it.........but I haven't checked that yet These are just the features off the top of my head........and I am sure if I poked around it can do more! A very powerful, and reliable browser! This is something that I would have even paid for if I would have known about it, but lucked out and got a free version. My advice is to use IE as a backup, and get Opera for your main! LONG LIVE OPERA!!! |

Tuesday, October 31 2006, 23:41:08 #37524 Widgets are basically extra add-ons. For example Yahoo! has widgets that you can download. There are a couple of them that are somewhat useful like their stock ticker and the one that shows the weather forecast.
Basically they are extras running in the background that are usually assigned to a specific key. For example when I had the Yahoo! stock ticker and weather wigets installed I would hit "F8" and they would automatically appear on my desktop over anything else I had up at that time. IE is a backup because most webmasters are ghey and design websites "ONLY" for IE. Alot of them are changing over now.........thank god! but everyone once in awhile you will find a website that can only be viewed in IE. |

"Is there anything we can do for you?" "Yeah, go away." Mind you, I don't suppose you want to work in Birmingham |

Wednesday, November 1 2006, 17:43:24 #37579 Yes Opera is good and a far 3rd to IE and Firefox. When I was working at Fry's those guys where trying to get us to use their branded browser. However Fry's was too cheap and never bought into it, although it was really fun to mess with the sales guy.

Mind you, I don't suppose you want to work in Birmingham I personally don't have any problems with it, and believe me I am not putting down FF because I still use it, and love it as matter of fact I am just using Opera more now because its got everything I need and then some, and the more I look at their website, the more I am finding out that it can do. It's just a very powerful and secure browser all around. It's the difference between driving a Ferrari (Opera), a Porsche (FireFox), and a Chevette (IE). A Porsche is a stylish great car, and I doubt you'll hear too many complaints about them engineering wise, and the Chevette is the shitty yet reliable car that if all else fails you can still get from point A to point B in, or you can drive the Ferrari that has everything in case you want it |
