No, based on number of balls you have. If you have 2, you get an invite.

iD sends invites "randomly", mostly US emails of course. Once you join, you are given 5 invites to give away. Gimme your working email and I will invite you. Word of caution: the login name you specify during registration will be the same in quake, and you cannot change it.
