Sunday, May 15 2011, 15:03:22 #43465 So I picked up a $1600 SuperTalent SLC SSD for my netbook the other day...
...on ebay for $165, brand new.
It's slower than my 60 GB MLC (multi-layer cell) Corsair ( 285 MB/s read, 275 MB/s write on Corsair compared to 125 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write on SuperTalent) but it's really not noticeable in everyday use. I'm a big skeptic when it comes to SSD reliability so I went for SLC (single-layer cell) SSD which has 10x the write cycle endurance of MLC drives.
If you are thinking of going to SSD (and I recommend that), go for RAID 0 setup with cheaper MLC SSDs and have a single HDD just for backing up the drive image of SSD RAID every 1-6 month, you will get incredible performance and reliability.

Good input, thanks! I'm also looking into building my next PC with SSD support. SLC is just so much more expensive
